Fifth generation (2005–present)

Ford introduced a redesigned 2005 model year Mustang at the 2004 North American International Auto Show, codenamed "S-197," that was based on the new D2C platform. Developed under the direction of Chief Engineer Hau Thai-Tang and exterior styling designer Sid Ramnarace,[41] the fifth-generation Mustang's styling echoes the shineback Mustangs of the late 1960s. Ford's senior vice president of design, J Mays, called it "retro-futurism." The fifth-generation Mustang is manufactured at the AutoAlliance International plant in Flat Rock, Michigan.
For the 2005 to 2009 production years, the base model was powered by a 210 hp (157 kW) cast-iron block 4.0 L SOHC V6, while the GT used an aluminum block 4.6 L SOHC 3-valve Modular V8 with variable camshaft timing (VCT) that produced 300 hp (224 kW). Base models had a Tremec T-5 5-speed manual transmission with Ford's 5R55S 5-speed automatic being optional. Automatic GTs also featured this transmission, but manual GTs had the Tremec TR-3650 5-speed.[42]
Ford announced in July, 2007 that all 2008 Mustangs would have seats containing material derived from soybeans.[43] A new option for the 2009 Mustang was a $1,995 glass roof.[44]
The 2010 model year Mustang was released in the spring of 2009 with a redesigned exterior and a reduced drag coefficient of 4% on base models and 7% on GT models.[45] The engine for base Mustangs remained unchanged, while GTs 4.6 L V8 was revised resulting in 315 hp (235 kW) at 6000 rpm and 325 lb·ft (441 N·m) of torque at 4255 rpm.[46] Other mechanical features included new spring rates and dampers, traction and stability control system standard on all models, and new wheel sizes.

The 2007 Autobacs D1 Grand Prix season was the seventh season for the D1 Grand Prix series and was the second season for its spinoff D1 Street Legal.

It was the first time since 2003 that the entire series took place entirely in Japan.

It began on 4 February 2007, as a D1SL exclusive event at Sekia Hills, the mainstay D1GP event opened on 25 March at Ebisu Circuit. At the same year, due to its popularity of its US point scoring round that was held over three seasons, it saw an introduction of its own domestic series, but the series would suffer two setbacks as it suffered from two cancellations, one at Irwindale Speedway on 11 March, due to its Japanese competitors who were to compete, had been building cars specially to compete in the series and could not get the cars ready in time for the event[1]

The D1 US organisation suffered a further blow when due to unresolved issues, the Alameda County Board of Supervisors refused license to the D1 event to take place at Altamont Motorsports Park on 24 June, forcing it to be cancelled.[2]

It was to be the second season for the Malaysian franchise, D1MY; but due to unforeseen circumstances, round 1, which was to take place on March, was cancelled. Nothing has been heard about the organisation since.[3]

The season will be best remembered for the two-car accident between Masato Kawabata and Daigo Saito in Fuji Speedway, when during the sudden death second tsuiou round, Saito dipped into the inner apex of the 300R corner, causing his car to understeer and collecting Kawabata's Silvia onto the tyre barrier in the process, severely destroyed both cars. Kawabata had a second luck escape as when he collided with the barrier, a nitrous tank housed on the passenger side of his vehicle exploded from the impact, but played no part in Kawabata's injury.Among those narrowly escaping death was Video Option cameraman, Zaku, had to duck to avoid debris from the crash. Both drivers survived without serious injuries, but however Kawabata had to be taken to hospital for treatment for whiplash injuries.[4][5]

The season will end on 25 November with an end of season All-Star event. The last D1GP event held will be on 21 October at Fuji Speedway and 11 November for D1SL at Sekia Hills.

It's time to finish up our week-long look at the cars of the various international drift series as we examine some of the cars from the European Drift Championship. Before working on Speedhunters, I had only a vague knowledge of the EDC, but I have been learning more and more about the series and its cars over the past few months and have been quite impressed with what I have seen. While you won't find quite the variety of cars that you see in the US Formula D series, the EDC has plenty of top quality cars and they seem to be getting better and better.

Not surprisingly, the most commonly seen car in the EDC is the Nissan S-chassis and there a fine examples of the S13, S14, and the S15 on the EDC roster. As of late the EDC has been drawing drivers from outside of Europe and this has brought even more flavor to the cars seen at EDC events.

Now let's take a look at the cars.

Paul Smith S15 Silvia

Paul Smith's 200SX AKA Silvia is a pretty standard drift-built S15. The car is sponsored by Abbey Motorsport which is one of the UK's big Japanese car tuners and works on a few EDC machines. Besides supporting the EDC, they also have experience running GT-R's in the UK Time Attack Series. You might notice the Rota sticker on the rear quarter panel. It seems that Rota Wheels is a big sponsor of EDC competitors and their wheels can be seen on many EDC cars.

Mark Luney Z33 Fairlady

Mark is one of the top EDC drivers behind the wheel of his "zed" 33 and he is currently in second place in the '08 season points standings. This Z is one of the most established drift cars in the UK and his seen plenty of action both in the EDC and in the old D1GB series. It is powered by a 3.8L turbocharged version of its original VQ35DE powerplant. You can see the vents behind the door that feed air into the car's rear-mounted radiator set-up.

Chris Parry AE86 Trueno

No article about the cars of the European Drift Championship would be complete without privateer driver Chris "Paz" Parry's awesome-looking AE86. This machine is powered by an F20C VTEC engine from a Honda S2000 (just like John Rusakoff's 86 in the states). There aren't many AE86's in the EDC, but luckily Paz makes up for it with both the quality of his car and his aggressive driving style. Speaking of aggressive style, this car took some heavy damage during a crash at the last EDC round. Paz should be back soon though.

James Russell R32 Skyline

This eye-catching pink and blue R32 Skyline was built by Distinctive Cars York and is driven by James Russel who was added to the DCY team for the 2008 season. The car is a rear wheel drive GTS-t model but its powered by a GT-R-sourced RB26 that makes close to 400hp. Besides this drift car, the DCY team has also built cars that compete in both time attack and drag racing.

Maciej Polody S14 Silvia

While looking through photographs of EDC cars, I can't help but notice the large number of orange cars running in the series. One of these orange cars is the NFS-sponsored S14 Silvia of Polish driver Maciej Polody. You can identify Maciej's S14 by its lack of front headlights. The car is built by the Polish tuning shop Markgum Sport.

Peter Barber FD3S RX7

Every drift series seems to have at least one RX7 out there showing what the rotary engine and and Mazda's fantastic chassis design can do. In the case of the EDC, it's Pete Barber in his FD3S that represents for the rotary crowd with it's fully built NA engine sourced from an RX8. The car's engine was built by Hayward Rotary who is one ot the UK's bigger Mazda tuners. Besides working on Barber's FD, they have built tons of fast old school rotary-powered Mazdas.

Daniel Eyles R33 Skyline

Daniel's gold R33 GTS Skyline seen in this photo without its front bumper is one the many EDC cars that is sponsored by Japspeed. This car is powered by a tuned version of the standard RB25DET. Although I am not really sold on the looks of this car's JDL aero kit, I do like the looks of the gold paint and matching gold wheels. I can't help but think of Top Secret's demo cars after seeing this one.

Declan Hicks GZ20 Soarer

Declan's older Toyota Soarer is one just a few similar cars that have competed in pro drifting worldwide. Besides this car, Tokita's Z10 that used to run in D1 comes to mind. In additon to that I have also seen a few Aussie drivers running the early Soarers. According to Declan's site, there are just four GZ20 Soarers in all of the UK. His car is powered by a 1JZGTE that makes 500hp.

Adam Richards A31 Cefiro

This car probably looks familiar to you if you read my post about the cars of the New Zealand drift scene. Not content with sticking to his homeland of NZ, Adam Richards brought his camo-painted, GT-R-powered A31 Nissan Cefiro to the UK to compete in the EDC. He made his debut at Santa Pod where he put in an impressive performance against the top European drivers.

Tim Marshall R33 Skyline

Tim Marshall's R33 is another one of the several rear wheel drive Skyline models that can be seen in the EDC. What sets Tim's Skyline apart from the others is its Chevrolet V8 engine which gives the car a muscle car-like sound. Much to the chagrin of the "purists" ,the cost efficiency, power output, and reliability of the GM V8 makes it a very enticing choice for drifters in many countries. Tim is currently in 7th place overall in the EDC standings.

Alan McCord RPS13 180SX

Alan's 180SX is another fairly standard S13. Of course a standard car does not mean standard results as Alan is currently ranked at 6th place in the EDC standings. He has some very interesting graphics going on with the orange pinstriping. You can also see the orange pinstripes on the wheels. Speaking of the wheels, this another one of the EDC cars that is running wheels from Rota.

Kazuhiro Tanaka Impreza

As you have probably heard, Team Orange members and D1GP stars Nobushige Kumakubo and Kazuhiro Tanaka are now competing in the EDC. They are both using their overseas cars which were previously seen in the United States. Just like in Japan, Tanaka's car has green graphics and the later model front end. Both of the Team Orange Imprezas are maintained by Zen Performance while in the UK. Zen also runs a very competitive GC8 Impreza in the UK Time Attack series.

Ben Broke Smith JZX81 Chaser

Ben Broke Smith AKA "Bon Bon" is one of the most active drifters in the UK competing in the EDC, the Pro Drift Series, and the JDM All Star series. His car is the Driftworks JZX81 Toyota Chaser seen above. For more on Bon Bon's Chaser, check out Antonio's piece about the car right here. Not only is his car really cool, but Ben is an amazing driver as well and he is the current points leader of the EDC series.

Stephen Evans Toyota Starlet

Stephen "Stiggy" Evans' Toyota Starlet has to be one of the most unique cars in the EDC. First of all, the Starlet is a rare car in general, but Stiggy's car is powered not by a 4AGE swap, but by a Ford four cylinder engine similar to the one found in the Pinto. I couldn't find any technical details on this car, but from what I have read the Pinto swap is actually fairly popular among the Starlet guys in Europe. Anyone have more info on this car?

Phil Morrison S15 Silvia

Phil's S15 is one of the new EDC cars for 2008 and after a long build process, it made its debut earlier this season. This car has been built with an incredible attention to detail. It is powered by 2JZGTE engine from a Toyota Supra that has been pushed way back into the firewall for better weight distribution with the heavier inline six. On the outside the car is running aero from Vertex Ridge and a custom set of Do-Luck's Double Six wheels.

Mike Gaynor E30 BMW

For the polar opposite of Phil's S15, we have the "Tramp Drift" E30 BMW 3-series driven by Mike Gaynor . Interestingly, this is one the few European cars to be found in the European Drift Championship. Many components on this car are homebuilt and although its not an EDC-regular, it has seen some EDC action after Mike had success in the British Drift Championship feeder series. As you can see in the photo, the car looks to be capable of some nice smoke production.

Nobushige Kumakubo Subaru Impreza

Of course we couldn't leave out Team Orange's Nobushige Kumakubo who after competing in only half of the EDC rounds this year is already in 9th place overall. He was the runner up and the winner at the past two events respectively. While he is driving his Evo IX back in Japan, his international car is an Impreza that is not unlike his 2006 D1GP championship car. With two rounds left this season, Kuma will surely be aiming for the championship.

Brett Castle S14 Silvia

What better car to finish out this post with than Brett Castle's S14 Silvia. Brett was the 2007 EDC Champion and is currently in third place in the 2008 standings. His S14 is outputting around 450hp, but I'll leave the rest of the details to our HD Car Tour video which you can see here. There is nothing outrageous about this car's specs, but combined with Brett's driving skill it is one of the best performing and most consistent machines in the EDC.

Ken Nomura (Shinjitai: 野村謙 Nomura Ken?, born Fukuoka, May 9, 1965) is a drifting driver from Japan. He made his debut in the D1 Grand Prix in the 3rd round in 2001, driving the Blitz D1 Spec ER34 Skyline which he still drives. His nickname is Nomuken (のむけん) or Monkey Magic (as a reference to his company).

In his youth, Nomura was a baseball player and was very well known within his region, but his career never progressed any further through injury and turned to property developing and monocle adjustments.[1] Once he gained his driving licence, he was dedicated to night-time street drag racing and then progressed to touge racing.[1] In 1992, Nomuken was runner up in the "All Japan Ikaten" Finals and later in 1996 opened his own tuning shop Uras (reverse for saru, Japanese for monkey), producing drift specific products.[1]

When he first joined the D1GP series in 2000, his performance was average, he had been away from drifting for some time before competing in its inaugural year. But as soon as he signed a contract with parts manufacturer Blitz as a works driver, his skills quickly developed.[1]

In the D1 events, he is known for his imitation of a monkey, as the pioneer of the smoke technique, he drifts with the most smoke. He is widely a fan favorite in the series.[1] He also competes in the budget spinoff series, D1 Street Legal with a toned down version of his Skyline.

In 2006, Ken Nomura won the D1GP Non Championship Event World All Star.

He has also appeared for a TV commercial for his sponsor, Dunlop Tires in Japan, appears as a guest presenter in Video Option and Drift Tengoku as well as a columnist for the Option magazine and judges in drift events.

Wiesmann Roadster

Check out how cool this Wiesmann Roadster car is! Wisemann is an automobile manufacturer in Germany. The company was founded in 1985 by the brothers Martin Wiesmann and Friedhelm Wiesmann. The cars are manufactured by hand in Dülmen.

The company originally manufactured custom hard-tops for convertibles, which they continue to do. The first roadster left the workshop in 1993. As of 2006, they produce the Wiesmann MF 3 and MF 30 roadsters and the Wiesmann GT MF 4 coupé, all of which utilize engine and transmission components supplied by BMW.

The Wiesmann logo portrays a gecko, as Wiesmann cars "stick to the road like geckos to a wall".

Wiesmann had plans to begin exporting vehicles to the USA by 2010, but recent reports indicate that Wiesmann has no immediate plans to sell vehicles in the United States because of exchange rates and the high costs of modifying and testing the cars in order to make them road-legal there.

VW Adidas Car - Golf GTI Excessive

Check out this cool car! Adidas have teamed up with VW GTI to create the aptly named 'Golf GTI Excessive'. Starting in June, Volkswagen, GTI and adidas will for the first time meld into a combined product as the Golf GTI adidas. The essential fact is that the GTI’s technology and styling – and its interior customised in the style of the adidas brand – are brought together to produce a real dynamic mix. Volkswagen expect the Golf GTI adidas to attain collectible status very quickly, given the past history of models such as the two Golf Pirelli GTIs (1983 and 2007) and the Golf GTI Edition 30 (2006). Check out the pictures and videos of this cool car here.

Like each of these limited-edition models, the new Golf GTI adidas will also launch with wide-ranging customised exterior and interior features. They include newly designed 18-inch “Serron” alloy wheels and a specially developed sport seat design. As on the Golf R, bi-xenon headlights and LED rear lights are aboard as standard equipment.

Showcasing the cool VW Amarok pickup truck! The Amarok is scheduled to make it’s world debut on the 15th of December 2009 as looking at these pictures and video, it going to be a beauty.

Initially there will be a 2 liter 4 cylinder common rail diesel producing about 120kw and 400nm which will be the strongest unit available. Fuel consumption will be awesome as the predicted range on a 80 Liter tank will be almost 1000km! A second, less powerful diesel and a direct inject petrol engine will also be offered later.

Double cab versions as well as single cab versions will be offered, but no extended cab versions are on the cards. At least not for the launch. Three levels of specification will be offered – basic, trendline and highline but no word on pricing yet.

VW Scirocco SC 350 Tuned by Sportec

Cool Swiss car tuning specialist Sportec has turned its attention on the Volkswagen Scirocco with the release of a new performance package. Among other things, Sportec’s program consists of engine upgrades, a sports suspension, alloy wheels rims and other components.

For the Scirocco 2.0 TFSI 200HP, Sportec offers various performance optimizations that boost the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine’s output from 240HP to 350HP. In the most powerful version, the maximum torque takes a massive leap from 280 to 480Nm (354 lbs/ft).

To achieve these figures, the Swiss tuner’s engineers modified the 2.0 TFSI’s supercharger, updated the ECU and replaced the stock exhaust system with a new free flowing one. A carbon-fiber engine cover completes the package.

To improve the Scirocco’s handling, Sportec developed a new sports suspension that brings the coupe 35 mm closer to the ground while the coupe now sits on 20-inch alloy wheels shod in 245/30 high-performance sport tires. Finally, for the interior, the Swiss tuner offers a 4-part floor mat set made of soft velour and a multi-part carbon interior with the Sportec logo.

$30 Million Most Expensive Car

The most expensive car in the world is a cool $30 million art Deco-inspired 1936 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic. It has reportedly been sold at auction this week in California for $30 million to an unnamed buyer. This car is taken from the Most Expensive website.

Only three of these Bugatti cars were built. And just two are still around. This car was owned by the late Dr. Peter Williamson, a California neurosurgeon and car collector. The other one is owned by fashion designer Ralph Lauren.

The 1936 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic is one of only three of its kind ever produced. Praised for its art deco elegance, the car was considered highly avant garde in its day. It came on to the market following the death of its owner, Peter Williamson, a neurologist and well-known car collector.

A Santa Monica auction house, Gooding and Co, announced the sale and claimed to have set a new record. The firm did not officially release a sale price, although people close to the transaction said the Bugatti had gone for between $30m and $40m. David Gooding, head of the auction house, described the car as "one of the world's most significant and valuable automobiles that has been in a private collection and rarely seen during the past four decades".

The buyer in the deal, which took place last week, was anonymous. Several US reports named the Mullin Automotive Museum, a California collection created by a wealthy executive remuneration expert, Peter Mullin. The museum issued a statement denying that it had bought the vehicle, although it said it had been in discussions with the new owner about displaying the Bugatti to the public.

The previous record for the top-priced car at auction was held by a 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa, which was bought for €9m (£7.7m) at an auction in Italy in May last year.

Financial experts have predicted that there could be more blockbuster sales to come as ultra-wealthy individuals look for alternative ways to invest their money away from the risky, volatile financial markets.

John Collins, of the British Ferrari dealer Talacrest 2000AD, told Bloomberg News that with interest rates low, affluent buyers were in the market: "They want to buy real assets that have a limited supply and that won't go down in value. Modern art and classic cars are tracking each other at the moment."

Chris Evans splashes a cool £12 million on Ferrari car

Chris Evans has splashed out on a new car..a cool £12 million ($17 million) on a vintage Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spyder! It is now the most expensive car bought in Britain.

The 44-year-old Radio 2 DJ, who is known for his admiration of expensive sports cars, sold three Ferraris from his collection to pay for the 1963 model. The car cost £6,000 when it was first sold 47 years ago.

Chris Evans is a huge Ferrari fan and owns a fleet of classic and new models, most of which are white. The list includes a 250GT SWB, a 250 GT Lusso, a 275 GTB quad cam, a 288 GTO, a 308GTS, an F40, a 246 Dino, a 599 GTB, and a new California.

Chris Evans famously paid £5.5 million for a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder which used to be owned by Hollywood actor James Coburn.

Only 36 of the 174mph top speed racing cars were made. The car has five manual gears and does zero to 60 in 6.1 seconds.

Toyota Hilux - Top Gear Volcano Pictures

Cool pictures from Top Gear last week when they went up the Eyjafjallajökull in a Toyota Hilux. Little did they know the active volcano would cause so much European travel havoc. Luckily, the Top Gear cast and crew escaped just hours before the volcano erupted. Finally a bit of good PR for Toyota. The Hilux remains truely a cool truck!

By modifying the same Toyota Hilux they took to the north pole with water-cooled tires and a roof-mounted ash-guard, the Top Gear team just scaled an active Volcano in Iceland for an upcoming episode. "They never take risk!" said an Icelandic Volcano expert who traveled with the crew as an adviser.

Like all other episodes, this one appears to have been carefully planned, with full permission from the Icelandic government. In addition to volcanoes and a collapsed economy, Iceland is known for its ridiculously epic off-roading so we expect the episode to be insanely awesome and heroic.

It turns out Top Gear is taking partial responsibility for the blast:

Cool Extreme Sports Lovers Car - Toyota/Billabong Ultimate Venza

Check out this cool Toyota Billabong extreme sports lovers car mash up called the Ultimate Venza. This new project was started by Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc. which teamed with Billabong and Street Image to create the perfect active sports vehicle capable to take you the beach, lake, mountains, skate park or anywhere in between and have a blast.

This 2009 Toyota Venza was modified by Street Image in order to support top extreme athletes at future competitions. A new and aggressive custom body kit was added and this includes a unique Toyota/Billabong exterior paint design, fender flares and alloy wheels. The custom roof rack was designed by the manufacturer to accommodate surf, snow and wake boards.

Street Image also installed a front and rear hitch receiver and Grinch Winch in order to pull wake boarders into waves or snow boarders and skaters across flat land to a jump or rail. The kit is completed by the large Enkei wheels wrapped in Nitto tires. Behind these wheels, we have a new Toyota Racing Development (TRD) big brake kit that was added to provide superior traction and stopping power when driving off the beaten path or to the beach. Inside, the Ultimate Venza features genuine Billabong materials and construction: the seats are custom upholstered with wet suit materials and incorporate Billabong’s latest design scheme and colors while the headliner is an artistic color collage depicting Billabong athletes in action.

Also, the interior modifications includes “living” features that, according to the manufacturer, they will allow the athletes to conduct many everyday endeavors while on the go or at competition sites. One of the most interesting features would be the custom heated shower system with a 10 gallon capacity for rinsing off after surfing. A Verizon Wireless access point router was also installed, which will allow athletes to receive up-to-date surf or snow reports and other important information. Of course, the car needed a state-of-the-art audio and video equipment from Fujitsu Ten’s legendary Eclipse brand that features a multi-media DVD head unit, iPod interface, head rest-mounted LCD monitors, 18 speakers and 2,200 watts of power.

Porsche Boxster Spyder - Looks Cool!

Porsche’s current cool 2 seater roadster car, the Boxster is to get a performance makeover for the final few years of its life when a light and fast hardcore version called the Boxster Spyder hits UK car showrooms. The Porsche Boxster Spyder, revealed in these official Porsche pictures below, will make its motor show debut at next month’s Los Angeles Auto Show, before going on sale in the UK in February 2010.

Based on the current cool car that is the Boxster S, the Spyder gets modest power and torque hikes over the Boxster S, running instead the same 3.4-litre engine and tune as the current Cayman S, which develops 315bhp at 7200rpm and 273lb ft at 4750rpm.

Contributing just as greatly to this car’s improved performance will be the weight-saving regime Porsche has put it though. The Spyder is 80kg lighter than a regular Boxster S, and its 247bhp-per-tonne power-to-weight ratio compares impressively to that of a regular Boxster S (227bhp-per-tonne), a Cayman S (233bhp per tonne) - even an entry-level 911 Carrera (241bhp-per-tonne).

There are signs of that weight-saving programme all over this car. Up front, the regular Boxster’s daytime running lights and fog lamps have been removed and blanked off. At the rear, the car’s automatic roof system has been completely taken out, replaced with a lighter, manually-operated canopy-style roof and new “double-bubble” style rear deck.

Porsche’s weight-saving programme leaves an equally noticeable legacy inside the Spyder’s cabin. A pair of lighter and more supportive bucket seats take the place of the standard Boxster S’ chairs, and belt-like door pulls replace the regular car’s interior doorhandles. There is no air conditioning as standard and no CD/radio, although buyers will be able to option these systems. The car does feature electric door mirrors and electric windows.

Equipped with Porsche PDK double-clutch gearbox and Sport Chrono Plus package (which includes the all-important launch control), the Boxster Spyder will crack 62mph from launch in just 4.8sec – two tenths of a second quicker than a standard S. It’s slightly more fuel efficient than a Boxster S too, although because its roof must be removed for top speed runs, it has a higher co-efficient of drag and a slightly more modest top speed of 166mph.

The Boxster Spyder’s chassis will have a more focussed, sporting specification and set-up than a Boxster S’, although exact details on that remain to be confirmed. Expect a lower ride height, stiffer springs and anti-roll bars, and fixed rate dampers weighing less per corner than Porsche’s sophisticated PASM dampers.

Exterior design flourishes unique to the Boxster Spyder include restyled air intakes in its front valance and on its flanks, a new high-level brake light at the rear and an extended rear spoiler. On the inside, a body-coloured transmission tunnel and fascia accent set the car apart.

From the country that has the world’s greatest concentration of supercar manufacturers comes the world’s fastest cop car.

Yes, the lucky Italian cops have a Lamborghini Gallardo at their disposal, a genuine police car used by the Italian Carabinieri to patrol the Salerno-Reggio Calabria highway outside Rome. Prime hunting ground indeed, because its 5.0-litre V10 will grant it 193mph flat out and a tarmac-ruining 0-60mph time of around four seconds. But it isn’t just a patrol car for chasing wrung-out Fiats, Alfa Romeos and the occasional Ferrari.
The Police-liveried Gallardo also doubles as a super-fast response car, with the ability to be the first on the scene of a serious accident. It carries life saving medical equipment such as a defibrillator to revive car crash victims, and is used as a high-speed shuttle to transport organs between hospitals. Best of all is that with four-wheel-drive sending all 500 horses into the road, the Gallardo patrol car can be used all year round in all weathers.

Ferrari 250 GT Police Car

Believe anything Hollywood says and you’ll already be thinking all the cool coppers drive around in Ferraris – they certainly do in Magnum, Miami Vice and Bad Boys 2. But back in the ‘60s the Italian police drove one for real.

The lucky driver’s name was Marshal Armando Spatafora, something of a legend in Rome it seems, and his car was a 250 GTE. Together, they patrolled the streets of Rome for nearly a decade, hunting down serious criminals in the kind of heroic chases Hollywood directors would kill for.
For its day, the car was seriously quick, with a 240bhp engine that could sling-shot it speedily round the tight Roman streets. As you’d expect, no car of the day stood a chance, especially as the GTE shared its roots with the 250 GTO, one of Ferrari’s finest supercars and racers. The 250 GTE was also the first mass-produced four-seat Ferrari, so there was actually a bit of space to stick any arrestees. But it looked so damn cool you’d probably want to commit some crime just to see it in action. These days it's as rare as a straight politician but the actual car used still survives in a museum of police cars in Rome.

This cool Peugeot SR1 Concept Car is an all-wheel-drive turbo hybrid that has a mean 313 horsepower whilst delivering great fuel consumption of 48 mpg. One of the more quirky cool concept cars at the Frankfurt Motor Show yesterday was the Peugeot BB1. The design brief for the BB1 was to provide maximum versatility, a compact size, manoeuvrability (3.5m turning circle) and good performance levels.

Peugeot has unveiled a hybrid concept car called the Peugeot RC Concept Car.

The cool RC concept car is the first vehicle designed by Peugeot's new design boss Jerome Gallix and will debut at October's Paris motor show with design cues that will first feature on the all-new 408 large car due in 2010.

Peugeot's Lion badge has been supersized for the sleek-looking RC concept, a four-door GT coupe that joins the likes of the VW Passat CC and forthcoming Porsche Panamera and Aston Martin Rapide in mimicking the Mercedes-Benz CLS.

The Cool RC Concept Car evolves styling of previous Peugeot concepts - 2002's RC Spade and RC Diamond, and 2006's 908 RC - as well as using the two capital letters that signify the company's sports models in mainland Europe (instead of GTI as in markets such as Australia and UK).

A toned-down version of the new, four-seat RC's aggressive-looking front end is set to form the French brand's new corporate face, replacing the gaping-grille design first introduced on Peugeot production models with the 2004 407.

The rear-three-quarter view of the RC - called the ‘RC...' by Peugeot because it will adopt a more complete name at its Paris unveiling - is also said to provide a strong clue to the appearance of the 407's replacement, the 408.

Peugeot is so far being vague about the RC's engine, saying only that it is a "highly innovative" hybrid system capable of generating a potential power output of 230kW yet only emitting 109 grams per kilometre of carbon dioxide (CO2). The car maker says the RC is also capable of zero emissions when running in electric mode.

Peugeot has previously used the 307CC Hybride concept to preview a diesel-electric hybrid drivetrain the company said it planned to put into production by 2010.

Cool 11m Scrappage Car

This cool 11-metre car is created out of more than 2000 scrapped car parts including a door from a limousine and a set of furry dice. The car is advertised as having 'one careful owner - and any number of really, really careless ones'.

It was created by a reputable British sculptor, a commission for a car maker in the United Kingdom. Nissan was seeking to make a statement about the effectiveness of the UK Government's Scrappage Scheme. The deal saw generous incentives offered to new car buyers who were willing to trade in their eight-to-10-year-old vehicle to be scrapped. It is credited with keeping car sales ticking along through the worst of the recession last year.

Downing Street is pulling the plug on the car scrappage scheme in the UK, but Nissan is among manufacturers now offering their own trade-in system, which they say will put more people in cars meeting the strict Euro 5 emissions standards. In Nissan's case, that's a $5000 minimum trade-in for any vehicle over seven years of age traded on any new British built Nissan. Effective until the end of June, the deal covers the Micra, Note, Qashqai and Qashqai-Plus.

001: the BMW Z8

In the 1999 film The World Is Not Enough, James Bond piloted this bad little Beemer before it was officially produced by BMW. Apparently, those are the kind of perks that accompany a license to kill. During filming, the crew actually used a series of working mock-ups of the Z8 that vary a bit from the official production car. After the first model rolled out of the factory, all 5,703 of the original BMW Z8’s sold out, going for a starting price of $128,000.

002: the Alfa Romeo 159
The Alfa Romeo 159 is among the latest James Bond sportscars, as featured in the 2008 Bond film Quantum of Solace. This one, however, isn’t driven by 007– but a chase scene rival pitted against Bond’s Aston Martin. During the production of the film, the set was closed down due to a third and terrible accident where a stuntman driving the 159 crashed into a wall. The stuntman was airlifted to a nearby hospital where he lay in a coma for days– the same hospital in which he was treated for injuries in shooting the same scene days prior. If you perform your own stunts and want a piece of the Bond villainy action, you can get your hands on an Alfa Romeo 159 for around $33k before import costs…

003: the 1971 Mustang Mach-1
In 1971’s Diamonds Are Forever, 007 took to the streets of Las Vegas in a Ford Mustang Mach-1– in hot pursuit of the Las Vegas Police. Diamonds was Sean Connery’s last film, but also the first film in history to feature the now-famous “two-wheeled stunt”, where a car is lifted off the ground, balancing on two wheels on one side of the car. The ‘71 Mach-1 featured plenty of muscle in its 429hp V8 option, which will fetch you around $25,000 well-restored on today’s market.

004: the Aston Martin DBS
Bond’s Aston Martin finally got itself a facelift. Like the BMW Z8, the Aston Martin DBS was featured in a Bond film before it hit the public. This $265,000 Aston Martin features a 6.0L V12 pushing 510 horses to hit 62mph in 4.3 seconds. The DBS was pitted against that Alpha Romeo 159 above, and this one didn’t escape without bruises either. During filming, a stuntdriver reportedly lost control of the Aston Martin– which wound up in Lake Garda in Italy…

005: the Toyota 2000GT
Produced between 1967 and 1970, the Toyota 2000GT was built in very limited numbers, designed to show that Japanese autos could compete with the sportscars of Europe. Apparently James Bond took notice, as the 2000GT was famously featured in 1967’s You Only Live Twice. However, Bond’s 2000GT had a slight problem– Sean Connery was too tall to fit in the Toyota, so a convertible version was made to compensate. While the original 2000GT sold in the U.S. for $6,800, it can be found at auction today for as high as $200,000.

006: the Lotus Esprit
In 1977’s The Spy Who Loved Me featuring Roger Moore, the Lotus Esprit became one of Q’s most impressive sportscar mods. In a long chase scene between 007 and the infamous Bond-villain Jaws, Bond’s Lotus Esprit makes a cunning escape by transforming into a fully-diveable submarine. While a submersible version featuring that bikini blonde above are not available today, a similar Lotus Esprit could be originally purchased for around $16,800 at the dealer in 1977.

007: the Aston Martin DB5
Last but certainly not least– the original Bond-mobile, the 1963 Aston Martin DB5. In the 1964 film Goldfinger, 007 was provided with a weaponized DB5 by Q Branch himself. Aston Martin, however, wasn’t so keen on the deal. After much negotiating, Aston Martin finally agreed to a product placement deal that made automotive history for the brand. The DB5 was the latest-and-greatest sportscar to be produced in the UK, initially selling for $13,000. Its inline six engine produced 282hp to hit 62mph in 8.1 seconds. Bond’s version, however, was outfitted with an array of gadgets from smokescreens to heavy machine guns. Its not the weaponry that makes the Aston Martin DB5 a legend– it is its design which symbolizes the class and cool that has made James Bond the legend he is today. Hydrogen Scorpion Car

A Texas startup has finally pulled the wraps off its 40-mpg, 450-horsepower Scorpion roadster, a hand-built hydrogen-burning "eco-exotic" that is sexier than Angelina Jolie and has the performance to provide more grins than nitrous oxide.

Ronn Motor Company unveiled the Scorpion today at the big SEMA, or Speciality Equipment Market Association, automotive trade show in Las Vegas, which may be the perfect place to debut so flashy — and innovative — a car. The company hopes the Scorpion does for hydrogen what the Tesla Roadster has done for batteries.

"We want to build cool cars, just more responsibly”, company president Ronn Maxwell told Wired.com. "Our hope with the Scorpion is to implement a paradigm shift not only in how the industry looks at supercars but at cars in general."

The Scorpion gets its sting from a hydrogen delivery system the company calls H2GO. While cars like the Honda FCX Clarity and Chevrolet Equinox use hydrogen fuel cells to drive electric motors, the Scorpion uses electrolysis to convert water into gaseous hydrogen. The hydrogen is mixed with 91-octane gasoline to improve the fuel economy and reduce the emissions of the car's 3.5-liter internal combustion engine.

Maxwell, a 40-year auto industry vet and lifelong gearhead who holds several patents, is using the limited production — just 200 will be built — Scorpion to prove the technology works and legitimize the H2GO system the company will begin selling for $1,000 early next year. The way he sees it, if H2GO works on the Scorpion, it'll work on your Civic.

Maxwell didn't offer much in the way of specifics, saying the publicly traded company is still dotting the i's and crossing the t's on the venture. But he says H2GO is good for a 15 percent to 33 percent improvement in mileage, a noticeable increase in power and a significant reduction in overall emissions. The company is pursuing EPA certification of the Scorpion so people can get a better idea of what the system is capable of. Maxwell insists the 40-mpg figure is the real deal.

The trucking industry has been using hydrogen boosting for years. But the Scorpion is significant because it uses what the company calls real-time hydrogen delivery as part of an original factory design. And unlike BMW’s Hydrogen 7, Scorpion does not keep any 30-gallon tanks full of liquid hydrogen lying around at −253 °C (−423.4 °F).

“Our system does not require any pressurized hydrogen storage. It’s completely safe and uses water from your garden hose to create hydrogen on demand. We are simply increasing the efficiency of what’s already there”, says company COO Damon Kuhn. “Even better, the infrastructure to support this technology is here right now, not 10 years from now.”

Kuhn is referring to the biggest challenges to hydrogen's use in vehicles — the need for a fueling infrastructure, a venture that by any measure will take many years and many millions of dollars.

Ronn Motors is confident that the sexy Scorpion will top 200 mph. The chrome-moly chassis and carbon-fiber body surrounds a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 in a car that weighs just 2,200 pounds. The engine was sourced from Acura — it's the same mill found in the TL Type S, albeit turbocharged — and mated to a six-speed gearbox. The car will set you back $150,000, and if 450 ponies isn't enough, another $100 grand will get you a tweaked version with another 150 horsepower.

Tom duPont, publisher of the duPont registry, pulled the sheet off the Scorpion this morning and said, “If it was a square box with a bunch of batteries, I wouldn’t be getting pre-orders from NBA basketball players. The exotic styling and amazing performance mixed in with the environmental angle is really inspiring a lot of attention.”
